some thoughts about social media

<18.04.2023>

IMPORTANT NOTE

Passed some time, since I wrote this post (note is from 03.12.23), so I'm in some way changed my thoughts about social media. They still pretty strict in terms of customization and that I appreciate every personal web page much more than any social media page, but I don't think that everybody need this much of customization. If you just want to share pictures with friends, talk with them or tell your really important opinion look who's talkin, then you don't need to tweak every part of your page. In any case, the way of thinking, like in a post bellow is pretty elitist, from what I try to get away from. There's also problem of how those proprietary social networks treat users information, their photos, chats with friends and really important opinions, because usually they store them is a shoe box wrapped in duct tape and tell "this is really secure trust me". But, in any case, privacy have nothing to do with a theme of this post

tldr social media bad personal web pages good

(Note, that I'm not talking about social networks where people split based on their interest like reddit (even through it has A LOOOOOT of problems but I don't really care about them) and I'm talking about social media that describe themself as blogging platform or something like that)

Recently I've been thinking, that internet, to be honest, is just glorified filesharing, isn't it? I mean, that every site is just html file on someones server, but everyone is making such a big deal of it, it's pretty funny looking at it from a side. So, what I was talking about

Modern social networks extremly limited in place of self expression, and if you disagree you are, obviously, wrong. Look at any social network - you can't set (at least on your page!!) yor background, cursor, place elemenets how you like it and how it's makes sence for you. All of the social network are extremly clrar, and you'll be lucky, if you can set something else besides profile picture and banner! It's also does not really matter, if it's privatly owned or not, mastodon and other fediverse stuff have simillar problem.

But I think that making alternative to propraitary platforms, you don't have to follow their design rules. Like, yeah, if it's something really different from other social medias a lot less people would understand at first glance how it work (to be honest it's hard to describe how mastodon works to someone far from all of it). But if your alternative can offer something, like no other platform can, people would be intrested in that for sure I think.

Anyway, despite proprietarity/openness, you have no choice but become part of unifed and easy to consume infinite feed, lightning up and burning down forever in this unstopable stream of content. (I think tumblr has a comprimise, theres pretty wide customization to blogs, but at the end of the day you still ends up in this endless faceless feed, but it's really hard to combine both, I think)

One more "sin" of social media is that sometimes people make stuff just to post it. Endless attempts to become famous and popular, or at least show off before your friends is much more important purpouse, than the process of what you are doing. With your personal website you have no statistics, no likes of some sort (at least if you won't bother with adding those), you have no way of knowing if anyone ever saw your website, and in this understatement is something intriguing. You do stuff not for anyone to see, but you do stuff because you like what you do and you want to share it. I mean, not like you can't share stuff you do in social networks, especially if you don't want to spent basically few day to understand how to make your site just to show your homegrew tomatoes, but I think that social media incite people to show off more (And not like no one ever creates websites just to show off)

And that's all just from the side of a creator, from the side of person who consuming all of that there's a lot of different problems I'm too lazy to write about maybe next time

And I just want to say, that any personal page, hoewer wierd, or even eyeburning it might be (like this one)? they anyway several times better than any page on social networks, at least because you understand, that this person got an idea and spent his time writing html page with his great idea, and it feels much more honest than anything on any social media. Personal pages in some way a reflection of you through html. Page like that you can explore for a long time, and if you ever stumble to a web ring, you might loose the whole day!

So I just want to say that

there should be news but you have js turned off so o welp
