deconsumptionisation or how to stop stimulating your brain every 5 seconds
whats the problem
capitalism. well it is without details + i cannot defeat it all by myself specially with my current lifestyle. tldr - capitalism creates and encourages mindless consumption of slop, and i want to avoid of mindless consumption which fills eternal feel of emptiness and thirst for more both of which are also created by system. if you feel the same, i hope my notes will help you!!
my personal conditions
everything described here, of course, not universally applied. under 'consumption' in this text i mean consumption of content, with other forms of consumption i dont think that i have problems with (although lately i've been eating too much sweets, ugh..)
but i want to do it without going to extreme, since its actually good thing - getting to know other peoples art!
but one thing talking about art, which can even motivate you for creating something, and the other thing is shorts and ticktoks and its analogs, which in 90% are absolute brainrot not worth anyones time.
im actually not that 'deep' into this and could get away from them with ease, but my problems dont stop with them, since i just have the craving for filling my head with essentially white noise. at now the ratio of content i consuming to my creation is around 85/15, while i would luke to have something like 25/75. also reading more books would be nice :p
what to do?
- dont reject everything at once. this is will give me some sort of feeling thats something unresolved which will lead me back to square one. i need to little by little, step by step cut it down. plus i already tried to rejecting everything few timesband look where am i now.
- replace what im watching now with less brainrot or even cultural things! for example not watch "i made 2 ai play chess but the fell in love" or "i finally completed smash ultimate for 100% almost.." and AT LEAST . objectively its not a masterpiece (although new episodes have sometime gorgeous animations) but it still better than anything that will melt my brain from youtube (tbh youtube does have educational stuff but be honest - is it really all that you watch there?)
- write reviews on everything i watch / play / read. i may be not the smartest or my thoughts may be not that interesting, but at least it will be a nice practice, i will try thinking about what i watch and convert it into words, because now its not that easy for me...
- focus on one activity. also maybe not at once, but at first at less stimulating one, and then total rejection. to be honest im doing great on that department lately, i just recently completed half life and i havent had anything on background and it was great because half life is such a cool and interesting game.
- theres some usefull extentions for browser like untrap for youtube which allows you to hide shots, i also disable infinite scrolling for recommendations. i wouldnt bet on apps or extentions which limit your screen time since you can always delete/disable them if you have craving or stuff like that which will make them pointless. thats why i believe that a better solution is to make it less interesting than limiting yourself
if you have a recommendation what to do yourself, feel free to contact me and i will add it here with your email/nickname!
first week (2.12.24 - 8.12.24)
of course, just as i said, i didnt reject everything all at once and i still spent much more time distracted then i would have wanted.. although at the end of the week and especially at sunday (thanks to snow)
so i see positive movements and i look to the future with hope!!
